Articles of Association of WVIA, INC, article II
The objects of this Association shall be to ornament and care for
the streets and public grounds of the Village of Wethersfield
and to promote all public improvements which shall make the
said Village a more pleasant and attractive place of residence.
Our history and contributions to Wethersfield
Oct 2, 1883
It was organized in Academy Hall, now the Town Office Building, Tuesday evening, Oct. 2,1883, and its purpose was "To make the village a more pleasant and attractive place of residence." Wethersfield was a tiny town in Connecticut with a population of 2,200. Most residents lived east of the present Silas Deane Highway.
1916
Funding for this Assoc was given in form of a trust fund established by the will of Lyman Hewitt (pictured below) "the net income to be expended for the care of sidewalks and for keeping in order and beautifying the parks, open spaces and street borders.
1926
Wethersfield Green Improvement Fund was created when the Women's Association voted to use their half of the proceeds of the Firemen's Field day for beautifying the Green. Firemen gifted funds and a public campaign produced more funds. Women's Association along with the Wethersfield Business Men's and Civic Association organized a special campaign to fund beautifying the area what is now known as Broad Street Green.
1930
The Silas Deane Highway was built to deter any traffic from the State's need for a throughway from Hartford to the shore. Once Silas Deane Highway was established, Old Wethersfield and the Green were freed of any threat of increased traffic and plans to beautify the Green moved forward.
1965
Provided funds to install new windows and erected the stone retaining wall at the Cove Warehouse. We planted Japanese yews along the entrance to the Village Cemetery and at Mill Woods Park, we planted evergreens at the rear property line.
1970
Invested in the plants on the landscaping at Town Public Works Maintenance Headquarters on Marsh Street. Member, Mrs Richard Willard, supervised the landscaping project.
1980
Hubbard signs were refurbish to it's original historic glory by WVIA member Pete November.
1997
Wethersfield, CT received Tree City USA certification from Arbor Day Foundation. We continue to be awarded this recertification for our efforts to this day.
2009
375 tree campaign was created to celebrate the town's 375th birthday. Residents, businesses and the town came together to help plant 375 trees!
